Sharpen Your Administrative & Leadership Skills

Ashland University is continuing its tradition of making high quality education both affordable and attainable with its accredited online Associate’s Degree in General Studies program.

The general studies online degree program is the perfect degree option for students who haven’t chosen which career path they would like to pursue just yet. Most importantly, coursework that is taken as part of the Associate’s Degree with a concentration in General Studies can be used later toward a Bachelor’s Degree at Ashland University.

The coursework for the Associate’s Degree in General Studies program, which includes standard Associate’s Degree core requirements, allows students to concentrate on specific academic areas that interest them most. The program will be especially appealing to students who have completed coursework outside of Ashland University, or perhaps toward a major that no longer exists, and would like to finish the degree they previously began. Some courses include:

  • Human Communication: this course encompasses communication theory, interpersonal communication, small group communication and public speaking. Emphasis is placed on speaking, critical thinking, listening skills. Attention is also paid to nonverbal communication.
  • English Composition: this course stresses the development of effective grammatical and rhetorical form through the assignment of expository and argumentative writing projects. Students will learn to reflect on ideas and observations, to use writing as a tool to sharpen those ideas, to reflect on their own writing process, and to use and cite sources accurately.
  • Finite Mathematics: this course covers some topics of modern mathematics including principles of counting, probability, matrices, linear programming, and mathematics of finance with applications to biology, business, economics, and other social sciences.

Here are some career paths a General Studies major could pursue:

  • Sales Agent: Performs sales tasks that include calls, visits, demos, and other sales related tasks.
  • Customer Service Representative: An employee who provides customer service to customers helping address any concerns or requests related to product/service of the company.
  • Administrative Assistant: Provides administrative assistance including filing, scheduling travel, type correspondence, and more as determined by the specific position.
